Waste Warriors

Suitable for primary and secondary schools.

The aim of this course is to inspire pupils showing them that with just a smidgen of passion and drive they can achieve their goals.  We demonstrate across a variety of topics and tasks that everyone has skills that can be developed which increases confidence and ultimately to improved self-belief.

Our modern lifestyles are entrenched with convenience which we’ve come to realise its causing damaging amounts of waste which isn’t sustainable.  These workshops highlight the issues we face and how we need to re-evaluate how we produce and consume food for the future health of our planet.

Course Overview

This course gets students to create a healthy food product e.g. a snack bar or drink and take it to market to sell for a profit. Each week, over a 10 – 12 week course, we teach a different topics from teamwork, recipe concoction, design, finance, marketing etc.. We divide the pupils into teams so they compete against each other. The course involves some exciting elements as seen in the famous programmes ‘The Apprentice’ and ‘Dragons’ Den’. Classmates battle against each other to become the winning team to then enter the inter-school competition which culminates in a presentation to a panel of ‘dragons’ at the Millfield Theatre Edmonton.. Our panel of judges are local entrepreneurs and influential business people.

Literacy
Persuasive writing, product description, interesting headings, compelling brand names, catchy slogans, presentations - we address literacy in multiple ways
Maths
Using scales, measuring items, pricing, discounts, percentages, profit, loss – these are some of the many ways we bring maths into our programme.
Creativity
Children love ownership of their ideas and enjoy thinking of new recipes & product ideas, inventing ingredient combinations, clever sales strategies and marketing ideas.
Design
Children love art and design. Logo production and the creation of marketing material is a course highlight for pupils
Interpersonal Skills
Learning how to work in a team, to compromise, to adapt, knowing leadership is getting the best out of people not a dictatorship, how to interact with the public and more
Presentation Skills
Teachers are amazed that we get even the most introvert children involved in presentations and it isn’t always the loud confident pupils that shine most
Analysis / problem solving
We have activities to challenge the children such as team games, market research, results interpretation and evaluation
Research
Finding out about more about the world around them – looking at food provenance and how and why companies operate as they do.
Inclusive
Every child has a role, every child has a chance to discover what they are good at and how they can add value to the team.

Impact

Over the 5 years that we have taught our Enterprise course we are proud to see the impact it has created. It has been so popular we have returned to schools and there are waiting lists for us to teach further years. Our course is flexible so we have been able to tailor it to different types of cohorts including special needs schools.  Recently we have developed the course to work alongside the Btech course so that it fulfils both the Plannng and Running an Enterprise modules.
