AQA Courses

Accredited Course

Delivered as a 4 week course in Haringey Training Kitchen and in Barnet

The aim of these courses is to demonstrate to children in care and young adult care-leavers that they are skilled and capable. They leave with a boost of self-confidence and an abundance of certificates which prove their worth. They can use their certificates to help with further training and education opportunities and to add to their CV for job opportunities.

the opportunity to

prove their capabilities

Course Overview

Each week we take a theme and cook recipes according to that. We always start the course with simple favourites but thereafter its up to the students to decide what we do. This is a course for them, as designed by them with some guidance. We teach them cookery skills and introduce them to a wide selection of recipes and open their eyes to dishes to which they would otherwise not gain exposure e.g. ceviche salmon.

These classes have been held in Haringey Sixth Form college, in the old Tottenham football stadium and more recently with Onwards and Upwards in Barnet. The courses have culminated in the students cooking dishes for their awards ceremony with Haringey Virtual School in the Lily-whites building, Tottenham.

Impact

Several candidates have moved on to have work experience with us and even to paid employment in our community cafe.

We believe in giving people a chance – when youths are given a break they can prove themselves and move onwards from there to shine.
